Efeitos Sociais do Tratamento e da Regulação de Dados Pessoais na América Latina

The network completed in 2011 its first joint research project, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

The aim of this project was to mapping the current situation of surveillance and data collection technologies in Brazil and Mexico from three main strands: a) National identity documents, b) Video surveillance in public spaces, and c) Personal Data on the Internet.

At this time of comparative research between the two countries, attempts to verify empirically how these issues are discussed: the laws of their countries, public and private actors, the media and to verify the types of technologies involved in these cases.

From a theoretical point of view, research is approached from the perspective of building a local knowledge that meets regional specificities, compared to existing studies, especially in Europe and North America.
